Ava Lee is a forensic accountant who specializes in finding and recovering lost funds -sometimes legally, sometimes via more creative methods. Young and petite, she is often underestimated in both her intellectual and physical prowess.
She is employed by the wealthy and mysterious “Uncle,” who may or may not be connected to a powerful Hong Kong gang, the Triads. When “Uncle” asks her to delve into a convoluted seafood deal that has cost his nephew $5 million, the journey takes her to dark places where even her quick wits and powerful fists may not save her.
Ava Lee is a heroine for our time. The “money mystery” seems poised for popularity in a time where crimes of finance are becoming the news to watch, a modern crime world where following the paper trail can be more important than tailing a “perp.”
Unfortunately, though The Water Rat of Wanchai has bouts of modern insight, the vision is best described as muddy. There are grains of success, but ultimately the reader is distracted and tired from wading through the excessive details that Ian Hamilton serves to us in an uneven narrative.
